Counter-terrorism authorities are spearheading a probe into an arson incident that took place in London. The Metropolitan Police responded to a call after 10:30 pm on Friday regarding an incident in Hendon, with the London Fire Brigade also on the scene. A man was observed approaching a line of shops carrying a plastic bag containing three bottles of fluid, which he later attempted to ignite next to the building. Fortunately, the bottles did not fully ignite, resulting in minor damage to the shopfront and no reported injuries. The suspect fled the scene.
Although the investigation is under the direction of Counter Terrorism Policing London, with support from officers in the North West Command Area, authorities have clarified that the incident is not being treated as a terrorist act. The police are maintaining an open-minded approach regarding the motive behind the attack, with no arrests made thus far.
Commander Helen Flanagan of Counter Terrorism Policing London stated that while the recent arson is not currently linked to prior incidents in North West London or the arson in Golders Green last month, similarities between the attacks have led counter-terrorism officers to take the lead. The public is urged to provide any information or footage that could aid the investigation. Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams, in charge of policing in the area, acknowledged community concerns following the Golders Green incident and assured a heightened police presence to address fears and prevent further acts of violence.
Increased police patrols and vigilance, including armed patrols and specialized officers from Project Servator, are part of the efforts to reassure the community and deter criminal activities.
