An 88-year-old man, identified as Matthew Healy, tragically lost his life after being viciously assaulted by a stranger while he was resting in his hospital bed at Mercy University Hospital in Cork, Ireland. The attacker, Dylan Magee, 33, who was reportedly in a hallucinatory state at the time, had no prior connection to Mr. Healy but shared the same hospital ward with him.
Magee, a resident of Churchfield in Cork, was found guilty of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility for the fatal attack on Mr. Healy. The victim’s family demanded the maximum legal sentence for Magee during the sentencing hearing.
The incident took place on January 22, 2023, when Magee, under the influence of various substances including antidepressants, cannabis, benzodiazepines, morphine, and cannabis, assaulted Mr. Healy in his hospital bed. Despite efforts by hospital staff to intervene, Magee repeatedly struck Mr. Healy before being restrained.
During the trial, it was revealed that Magee believed Mr. Healy had harmed his son, leading to the violent outburst. Despite expressing remorse for his actions, Magee’s impaired state of mind was acknowledged by both defense and prosecution psychiatrists.
Matthew Healy’s daughter, Claire, expressed deep sorrow over her father’s tragic death, emphasizing that he deserved a peaceful passing, contrasting sharply with the violent circumstances of his demise. She criticized the diminished responsibility plea, arguing that Magee’s drug-induced actions should not excuse his accountability.
In response, Ms. Healy urged the court to impose the severest punishment allowed by law and ensure the safety of her family from encountering Magee in the future. She painted a heartfelt picture of her father as a gentle and kind-hearted individual who did not deserve such a brutal end.
Acknowledging the family’s grief, Ms. Justice Siobhan Lankford extended condolences and postponed the sentencing of Magee, who remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
