Police have apprehended a suspect following an incident where an officer was reportedly attacked with a blade, resulting in facial injuries. The arrested individual, a 25-year-old man, is being held on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm.
The altercation took place in the King Street vicinity of South Shields, South Tyneside, earlier today. According to reports by Chronicle Live, two officers engaged with a person of interest in the area, leading to an assault on one of the officers with a bladed weapon, causing facial lacerations.
The injured officer received treatment at a local hospital for minor wounds. As a precaution, there is an increased police presence in the town center to conduct investigations and provide public reassurance. Northumbria Police have assured that there is no broader threat to public safety.
A police spokesperson disclosed that the incident occurred around 12:35 pm when the officers encountered the suspect in King Street. The injured officer was promptly taken to the hospital for assessment of minor injuries. The arrested individual remains in police custody.
