A man who had claimed he was too weak to even lift a phone was exposed running a 10K race and engaging in physically demanding activities. Ryan Scott, aged 39, had been receiving disability benefits due to an alleged workplace injury that he said severely limited his mobility. However, an anonymous tip led investigators to discover photographs of him participating in a 10K race and evidence of him returning to paid plastering work.
Surveillance footage captured Scott effortlessly climbing ladders, carrying heavy equipment, and working on construction sites, contradicting his claims of severe incapacity. He was found to have fraudulently received over £7,600 in Personal Independence Payment (PIP) benefits that he was not entitled to, leading to a community order and a fine being imposed on him.
Scott failed to disclose his improved health condition, which allowed him to compete in the endurance race. The court learned that his health had significantly improved by May 2023, prompting him to enter and complete a 10K race in June 2023. Subsequent surveillance footage showed him engaging in physical activities inconsistent with his reported limitations.
After investigation, it was determined that Scott had wrongly received benefits from May 2013 to April 2014, resulting in an overpayment of £7,625.68. Scott admitted that although he managed to complete the race, it was challenging, and he experienced physical repercussions afterward. Initially, he had claimed benefits legitimately, citing difficulties in basic tasks and mobility issues.
During his court appearance, Scott expressed remorse for his actions, attributing them to his medication and depression. Magistrates acknowledged that there was no initial suspicion of fraud and noted his lack of prior convictions. Scott was sentenced to a 15-day community order and ordered to pay fines and costs totaling £360.
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) emphasized the impact of benefit fraud on those in genuine need and warned against attempting to deceive the system. They underscored their commitment to uncovering fraudulent activities and urged individuals to report any suspicions of abuse.
