A man has been taken into custody by the police on murder charges for allegedly fatally shooting a seven-month-old baby girl in New York City. The NYPD identified the suspect as 21-year-old Amuri Greene, who reportedly fired shots while riding on the back of a moped in Brooklyn. The tragic incident occurred at the intersection of Humboldt and Moore streets in East Williamsburg around 1pm.
During a press conference, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch disclosed that the man on the moped fired “at least two rounds” while traveling in the opposite direction of traffic. Following the shooting, the moped crashed, leading to the capture of the suspected shooter. However, a significant manhunt is currently underway for the driver of the moped.
The baby’s mother discovered that her child had been hit after seeking refuge in a nearby store, as shown in CCTV footage released by the New York Post. The infant was rushed to Woodhull Hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries.
The suspects attempted to flee the scene but were swiftly apprehended on CCTV footage being struck by a car, causing both individuals to be thrown off the moped. The man on the back of the moped landed so forcefully that he lost both his shoes. He was subsequently transported to Brooklyn Hospital by ambulance and taken into police custody.
Reflecting on the heartbreaking event, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated, “A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant. Today serves as a tragic reminder of the urgent need to address gun violence in our city.”
