Man in Toxteth Jailed for Knife Attack and Threats

Date:

A man in Toxteth used a knife to harm another pub patron, causing a severe ear injury, and later assaulted his former partner with threats of violence. Joseph McClean-Evans was involved in an altercation at the Queens Arms pub, where he attacked a man named John Cassell after being punched and kicked to the ground. CCTV footage captured the heated exchange between the two men before McClean-Evans brandished a knife and wounded Cassell.

Police intervened, finding Cassell with a deep ear wound, although he refused medical assistance and did not file a formal complaint. McClean-Evans, visibly under the influence of alcohol and drugs, was apprehended as he tried to leave in a taxi, with bloodstains on his clothing and wearing only one slipper. Despite claiming self-defense, he was released pending further investigation.

Subsequently, McClean-Evans went to his former partner’s residence, engaging in a series of threatening calls and confrontations. He menaced her with violence, including references to shooting her family members and committing sexual assault. McClean-Evans, armed with a flick knife, physically assaulted her before leaving, continuing to harass her with menacing calls throughout the night.

With a history of criminal convictions, McClean-Evans pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding, possessing a bladed article in public, and harassment. He received a four-year prison sentence and a ten-year restraining order prohibiting contact with his former partner. The judge highlighted the unprovoked nature of McClean-Evans’ actions and the distress he caused, emphasizing the need for accountability and protection for the victim.
