Man Jailed for Deliberate Crash Injuring Teen

Date:

A man who took matters into his own hands by intentionally crashing a lorry into a teenager following the theft of his friend’s quad bike has been sentenced to 42 months in prison. Declan Fahey, 27, from Croxdale, County Durham, pursued the quad bike with the aim of causing harm, resulting in the 16-year-old victim sustaining multiple fractures to his face, skull, and leg.

Fahey denied the charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent but was found guilty by a jury. The incident, which occurred on Redworth Road in Shildon, involved Fahey driving his flatbed truck into the quad bike carrying multiple riders, causing them to be thrown off upon impact.

During the trial, Fahey refused to take responsibility for the injuries inflicted, claiming it was the rider’s own fault. The court heard that Fahey believed the individuals on the quad bike were linked to the theft, prompting his actions, which were described as premeditated or a vigilante-style attack by Recorder Richard Herrmann.

Despite having no prior convictions, Fahey was convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and received a 42-month prison sentence along with a 57-month driving ban. The victim suffered severe injuries including fractures to his skull, face, and thigh, as well as potential lung bruising.

Fahey’s defense attorney highlighted that the incident was impulsive and out of character for his client, emphasizing Fahey’s positive characteristics and strong work ethic. Despite the remorse expressed by Fahey post-incident, his actions led to serious consequences and a significant prison term.
