The Kennedy Center is in the process of taking down Donald Trump’s name as per a court order mandating its removal from the renowned performing arts venue. Scaffolding was put up around the section of the building that previously displayed Trump’s name. Due to thunderstorms in the Washington area, the Kennedy Center requested a deadline extension until noon Eastern Time on Saturday.
The Kennedy Center assured in a court filing that the removal work was in progress and would be completed in the early morning hours. Workers covered the scaffolding with tarps before proceeding to remove Trump’s name. Onlookers gathered on the plaza, taking photos and occasionally cheering while chanting for the removal.
Earlier in the day, a judge denied a request to delay the court-ordered deadline. Despite an appeal by the institution, the ruling stood, rejecting any pause in the removal process. Trump, who had previously not been involved with the Kennedy Center, gained significant influence upon his return to office, leading to his name being added to the building.
A U.S. District Judge ruled that only Congress could alter the Kennedy Center’s name and prevented the closure of the venue for planned renovations. The Kennedy Center’s leadership argued that the renovations were crucial, criticizing the lower court for intervening in the process.
While the Kennedy Center resisted removing Trump’s name, it took steps to comply with the court’s decision. Internal communications now refer to the venue as “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts” or simply “Kennedy Center.” The Kennedy Center’s website and official communications have been updated accordingly.
