A gas explosion in a village near Malaga has caused injuries to several individuals, including two children. The incident occurred at Mesón Morisco restaurant, resulting in the collapse of the building’s storeroom and an adjacent residence. Approximately 50 diners were present at the time of the explosion, which caused widespread panic among residents mistaking it for a bomb blast.

Debris scattered throughout the village of Sayalonga in the Axarquía region following the explosion on Tuesday evening, June 16. Emergency services reported that eight people, including two children, sustained minor injuries and received medical attention on-site without requiring hospitalization.

Authorities, including the Guardia Civil and firefighters, have cordoned off the severely damaged property for further investigation into the cause of the explosion. Witnesses described the chaotic aftermath, with one resident mentioning the sensation being akin to an earthquake.

The explosion, suspected to be triggered by a gas leak from stored cylinders, severely damaged multiple buildings, with fire crews working to secure the area and remove additional gas cylinders. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, and residents affected by the incident are being accommodated while assessments on building safety are conducted.

Mesón Morisco, a highly-rated establishment in the area, confirmed the explosion originated from the upper floor where the restaurant’s storage and gas supply system were located. The business announced temporary closure for recovery and renovation, expressing determination to reopen stronger than before.

The mayor of Sayalonga reassured the community that despite the property damage, there were no major injuries.
