“Keir Starmer’s Neutrality on Assisted Dying Bill Disappoints Advocates”

Date:

Keir Starmer’s recent statement has disappointed advocates and individuals with terminal illnesses as he confirmed the Government’s stance of remaining impartial on a fresh attempt to legalize assisted dying.

The bill, initially approved by MPs in a significant vote last June, faced setbacks in the House of Lords in May, with critics accusing peers of intentionally delaying the process by introducing numerous amendments.

Labour MP Lauren Edwards is reintroducing the proposal through a new private members’ bill, similar to the one led by her colleague Kim Leadbeater. Despite calls for government support to prevent delays in the Lords, Prime Minister Boris Johnson reiterated the neutral position taken previously.

The bill is set for its initial parliamentary stage today, with a debate expected during its second reading in September. Edwards, who secured the opportunity through a lottery system, aims to mirror Leadbeater’s proposal allowing terminally ill individuals in England and Wales, with less than six months to live, to seek assisted dying under medical and legal supervision.

Advocating for the bill, Edwards emphasized the need to fulfill the wishes of those in distressing situations. Humanists UK’s Andrew Copson highlighted the injustice of the previous bill’s failure in the House of Lords and stressed the importance of not letting unelected individuals impact end-of-life choices.

However, critics, including Labour’s Ashley Dalton, raised concerns about the bill’s perceived flaws and safety. The bill’s presentation in Parliament today marks the beginning of the legislative process, with a scheduled debate in September.
