A man, Kieran Humphreys, aged 33, has received a life sentence for the murder of a six-month-old baby. He violently shook the infant, causing critical injuries, and then attempted to cover up the incident by lying about what had occurred. The tragic incident took place while Humphreys was caring for the baby at the residence of his friends, Sam Wyatt, 33, and Karen Smith, 39, in Dolphin Drive, Houghton Regis. Instead of seeking immediate medical help, Humphreys contacted his mother, Sharon Humphreys, 58.
Following the crime, emergency services were only alerted 90 minutes later, and the baby, named Archie Woodbridge, was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately passed away later that evening. Humphreys was sentenced to a minimum of 21 years in prison at Luton Crown Court.
The court proceedings revealed that Humphreys had recently met Archie’s mother, Saskia Woodbridge, and had gained her trust by showing care towards her and her child. Shockingly, at the time of the offense, Humphreys was on bail for an unrelated matter, which included a condition prohibiting unsupervised contact with children under the age of 16.
Humphreys provided false information to paramedics and law enforcement, claiming the baby had been with his mother when he fell ill, denying his presence during the incident. His deceit was supported by his mother and the friends he was staying with, Sam Wyatt and Karen Smith, who also gave false statements to the authorities.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) highlighted the heartbreaking nature of the case, emphasizing that Humphreys deliberately caused Archie’s fatal injuries. Expert evidence presented during the trial indicated that the injuries sustained by Archie were not accidental but likely the result of Humphreys forcefully shaking the baby.
In addition to the murder charge, Humphreys was convicted of child cruelty due to the delayed request for medical assistance for Archie and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. His mother, Sharon Humphreys, along with Wyatt and Smith, admitted to conspiring to pervert the course of justice. Sharon Humphreys received a nine-month prison sentence, Wyatt was jailed for 15 months, and Smith was sentenced to a year in prison.
Detective Chief Inspector Nick Gardner from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit expressed sympathy for Archie’s family, condemning the senseless act of violence against an innocent child. The inspector emphasized the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals within society in light of such tragic events.
