A leading airline has announced the discontinuation of transatlantic flights from Manchester Airport. The decision by Aer Lingus will take effect in the coming weeks, with flights from Manchester to New York JFK ceasing from February 23, followed by services to Orlando and Barbados from March 31. However, a new route between Dublin and Barbados will be introduced by the Irish airline.
The move follows earlier speculation and affected travelers have been notified, offering them the choice of a refund or rebooking. Aer Lingus assured that services between Ireland and Manchester will remain unaffected, emphasizing its commitment to customer service.
Meetings have been conducted with staff at the Manchester base to outline severance package details. Meanwhile, a spokesperson confirmed the cessation of the Manchester-New York operations and the planned Dublin to Barbados service. The airline will engage with staff representatives to discuss operational adjustments and support measures during this transition phase.
Aer Lingus established its Manchester base in 2021 but found the transatlantic routes less profitable compared to operations from Ireland. Manchester Airport clarified that while long-haul flights will cease, Aer Lingus will maintain a strong presence through its short-haul network. The airport highlighted that other airlines serve the affected long-haul routes, ensuring continued connectivity for passengers in the region.
