Passenger Removed from London-Bound Flight Due to Regional Airspace Closure Amid Strikes
A traveler aboard British Airways flight 108 from Dubai to London faced an unexpected delay as airspace restrictions were imposed due to ongoing strikes. Mike Boreham, among hundreds bound for Heathrow, found himself disembarking just 10 minutes after boarding when the United Arab Emirates was targeted by missiles in response to a US-Israeli military operation.
Shortly after passengers were seated and the boarding process completed, the captain announced the airspace closure, halting all departures. The passengers were directed back to the terminal, awaiting further updates on their flight’s departure schedule.
Following the airspace shutdown, several flights bound for Dubai, such as Emirates from Dublin, Turkish Airlines to Istanbul, and LOT to Warsaw, were forced to return to their departure points. Dubai Airports confirmed the suspension of all flight operations at Dubai International and Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International.
Travel expert Jo Rhodes emphasized that airlines are adjusting schedules and canceling flights in the Middle East due to the current situation. Passengers affected by delays or cancellations might not be eligible for compensation but should receive assistance from their airlines, which may include provisions like food, drink, and accommodation as necessary.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued updated travel advisories, advising against travel to Israel and Palestine and urging British nationals in the Middle East to seek shelter immediately. British citizens in the region are urged to exercise caution, follow local authorities’ guidance, avoid military facilities, and ensure their travel documents are valid.
As tensions escalate in the region, it is recommended to stay indoors, avoid travel, and comply with authorities’ instructions. The FCDO’s updated guidance also instructs British nationals in Bahrain, the UAE, Qatar, and Kuwait to seek shelter promptly.
