A man, identified as David Huff, shocked the courtroom by admitting guilt in the killings of his son and girlfriend with a smirk on his face. The incident took place in Syracuse, New York State in March 2025, where Huff, aged 43, confessed to shooting 32-year-old Yeraldith Tschudy and 11-year-old Jeremiah Huff. Reports from local media mentioned that Huff exhibited a smile and chuckled while the charges were being read by Judge Ted Limpert.
During the court proceedings, Judge Limpert questioned Huff’s demeanor, asking if he found the situation amusing. In response, Huff mentioned having a joke on his mind. Although he denied shooting his son in the face, he admitted to both killings, according to 13 ABC reports.
Using a 12-gauge shotgun, both Yeraldith and Jeremiah were tragically killed. Additionally, investigators revealed that Huff’s stepfather was also targeted in the incident.
The sequence of events began with Jeremiah’s mother, Samantha Gallup Peltier, contacting emergency services after receiving a distressing call from her son just before the tragic events unfolded. Subsequently, Huff fled the scene before being apprehended by state police around 9:30 am the following day.
The defense team awaited a mental health evaluation for Huff, which took months to complete. According to defense lawyer Shaun Chase, multiple experts determined that any mental impairment Huff may have had was a result of voluntary substance abuse. Prosecutors were uncertain if Huff had consumed any substances on the night of the incident.
After being deemed fit to stand trial, Huff opted to plead guilty to second-degree charges rather than facing first-degree murder charges. This decision could potentially lead to the opportunity for parole when he receives his sentencing.
In New York State, parole can be considered for second-degree murder convictions after serving a specific period of time, allowing the individual to be reviewed by the Board of Parole. The sentencing for Huff is scheduled for a later date.
