“Markham IndyCar Debut Delayed, Fans Eager for Action”

Date:

The inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham experienced a setback at the starting line. Due to incomplete track construction, the first day of practice and qualifying for the only IndyCar event in Canada was called off on Friday. Organizers aim to accommodate the missed sessions within Saturday’s schedule.

Markham is hosting the event for the first time this year, having shifted from Toronto’s Exhibition Place where it had been held since 1986. IndyCar president J. Douglas Boles expressed disappointment in the delayed track build despite substantial support, emphasizing the importance of safety.

Longtime race attendees Mark Coburn and Scott Stobo from Kitchener and Waterloo, respectively, expressed mixed feelings about the postponement, understanding the safety priorities while lamenting the lack of on-track action that draws fans.

The event relocation from Toronto to Markham was announced last September by IndyCar and the City of Markham. The new circuit layout, situated between Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407, faced incomplete features like a pedestrian bridge and safety fencing adjustments.

Significant government investments totaling $5 million were confirmed, with additional capital spending by Markham exceeding $12 million. The race day saw a large turnout of fans, enjoying off-track activities and warm weather.

Saturday’s schedule is packed with IndyCar practice, qualifying, and other races on the road course. Organizers are optimistic about the circuit’s potential and express gratitude for Markham’s support in creating a thrilling race environment.

In addition to IndyCar, the USF2000 Championship, USF Pro 2000, Radical Cup Canada, and NASCAR Canada Series will also showcase their races over the weekend. Despite the challenges, fans are eager for the upcoming race days in Markham.
