Markham is gearing up for an exciting weekend as it hosts the NTT IndyCar Series, along with other motorsports events, for the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy. While IndyCar has a long history in Toronto, this will be the first time the race takes place outside the city, featuring a brand-new track layout.
The 3.52-kilometer, 12-turn course will traverse areas around the Unionville GO station, York University Markham Campus, and the Markham Pan Am Centre. To help attendees reach the track, it is recommended to utilize GO Transit, York Region Transit, or drive via Highway 407. Parking facilities will be located west of the event grounds.
Metrolinx is enhancing Stouffville Line services with additional trips from Union Station to Unionville GO in the mornings and afternoons on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Furthermore, there will be increased York Region Transit service and shuttle services provided by Markham between designated parking lots and the event location.
Residents of Markham have been enduring inconveniences due to track construction, including limited parking at Unionville GO and road closures on Enterprise Boulevard, Kennedy Road, YMCA Boulevard, University Boulevard, and South Unionville Boulevard until Monday morning. Some road closures will persist until August 27 for track dismantling.
The main event, IndyCar, will feature top drivers like Alex Palou, the current points leader and a four-time series champion. Other contenders to watch include Pato O’Ward, Kyle Kirkwood, David Malukas, Christian Lundgaard, and Rinus Veekay. Local talent, including Anthony Martella and Chase Pelletier, will also be competing in support series races.
The track in Markham poses new challenges for drivers with its smooth surface and unique layout. Drivers have expressed excitement and curiosity about the track’s elevation changes and tight sections. Tickets for Saturday and Sunday races are available on the event website, with Friday’s practice and qualifying sessions being free to attend as part of Fan Friday, with donations encouraged for Make-A-Wish Canada.
