“Mastiff-Great Dane Crossbreed Junior Faces Euthanasia”

Date:

A Mastiff-Great Dane crossbreed named Junior, responsible for severely injuring a young girl named Luna-Ann Forsyth in Nuneaton, is facing euthanasia following a court ruling at Warwick Crown Court. The incident occurred when Junior, escaping from confinement, attacked Luna-Ann, causing life-altering scars. Junior’s owner, Emma Callaghan, was previously convicted for failing to control the dog, resulting in Luna-Ann’s injuries.

During a recent court hearing, dog behavior expert Michael Barnett presented a report detailing Junior’s behavior. Barnett’s assessment, based on a review conducted in October 2024, revealed Junior’s stress and avoidance of interactions, as seen in video evidence. Although Barnett suggested that strict measures could potentially mitigate Junior’s risk, full owner compliance would be crucial. The severity of Luna’s bite, categorized as a level three on the Dunbar Dog Bite Scale by Barnett, was disputed by PC Craig Leach, who classified it as a level four due to the prolonged nature of the attack.

Junior, isolated in police kennels for almost three years due to reactivity towards other dogs, has been under solitary confinement. Despite no prior complaints about Junior, his unpredictable behavior during the attack raised concerns. The court noted Callaghan’s absence during the recent proceedings, emphasizing her responsibility in the incident and subsequent actions.

Judge Walsh, considering various factors, including Junior’s extended kenneling period and Callaghan’s behavior, ultimately ordered Junior’s euthanasia due to the unexplained attack and the dog’s unpredictable nature. Callaghan received a suspended three-month prison sentence, coupled with rehabilitation and community work requirements. No restrictions on future dog ownership were imposed on Callaghan post-sentencing.
