Travelers passing through a bustling airport have been alerted about potential exposure to measles. New Jersey health authorities have disclosed that an individual contracted the highly contagious illness after traveling internationally and transiting through Newark Liberty International Airport.
According to CBS News, health officials have pinpointed a specific time frame between 5:30 am and 9 am on April 14 when individuals at Newark Liberty’s Terminal B could have been exposed to measles. Additionally, there is a potential exposure warning at the Hackensack University Medical Center pediatric emergency department on April 18.
Common symptoms of measles include a high fever, cough, sneezing, watery and red eyes, and a rash. Health officials have cautioned that symptoms may manifest as late as May 11 for those who may have been infected with the virus.
As of now, no additional cases related to this incident have been reported. Measles can be transmitted through the air or via mucus and saliva from an infected person, with the virus lingering in the air for up to two hours post exposure.
The most effective preventive measure against measles and its complications is the MMR vaccine. In a separate development, UK parents are being strongly advised to verify their children’s vaccination records due to the ongoing measles outbreak in the country, with a significant number of cases already recorded this year.
The Mirror recently highlighted that the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued a warning urging families to familiarize themselves with symptoms and vaccination guidelines amidst concerns over declining vaccination rates. Current data indicates over 235 confirmed measles cases in England in the early part of 2026, with infections reported across all regions.
