An individual has passed away from measles, as confirmed by health officials, amidst a surge in cases throughout the UK.
Authorities revealed that an adult with an existing immunological condition succumbed to the illness. This tragic incident follows the deaths of two children in England due to measles in June.
From the beginning of the year until July 6, England has documented 883 confirmed measles cases as per data released by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
All areas of England have recorded instances, with over half (52%) in London, 17% in the West Midlands, and 10% in the North West, according to the UKHSA. The majority of cases involved children aged 10 and under, stated the government agency.
NHS leaders initiated a catch-up initiative targeting parents of children aged two to 11 who missed the MMR vaccine safeguarding against measles, mumps, and rubella. This vaccine now also shields against chickenpox, known as the MMR/V vaccine.
Efforts are underway to reach approximately one million families with children who missed one or both doses of the vaccine. Data for the initial three months of the year displayed that 84.1% of five-year-olds had received both MMR vaccine doses.
General practitioners will reach out to parents of children under six years old, while those with children aged six to 11 will be contacted through various channels like the NHS app, text, email, or letter.
Earlier this year, the World Health Organization declared the UK no longer measles-free due to a stagnation in vaccination coverage and a surge in cases.
Measles spreads through infected individuals’ air or water droplets released by breathing, coughing, or sneezing. Besides fatalities, it can rarely cause blindness, deafness, and neurological issues. Infected individuals are contagious from the onset of symptoms until four days after the appearance of the rash.
Earlier concerns arose this year due to low vaccination rates, leading to unvaccinated children possibly being sent home from school during an outbreak.
The World Health Organization mentioned that measles, previously eliminated in the UK from 2021-23, resurfaced in 2024 due to vaccine coverage dropping below the 95% threshold required for herd immunity.
According to NHS guidance, measles typically begins with cold-like symptoms, followed by a rash a few days later, and some individuals may develop small spots in their mouth.
The initial stages of measles exhibit cold-like symptoms, followed by the appearance of small white spots inside the cheeks and on the back of the lips a few days later. Subsequently, a rash emerges on the face and behind the ears before spreading to the entire body.
