In Wirral, three men have been convicted for the tragic murder of Jackie Rutter, who was fatally shot on the doorstep of her residence. The victim, a 53-year-old mother of six and grandmother of five, met her demise at her home on Meadowbrook Road in Moreton back in October 2022. James Byrne, Barrie Glynn, Simon Allen, and David Harrison stood trial at Liverpool Crown Court for three months, facing accusations related to the murder.
According to prosecutors, the shooting was a deliberate act of vengeance stemming from a drug-related disagreement. Allegedly, Ms. Rutter’s sons, Peter and Steven, had appropriated a mobile phone utilized by Byrne and another individual, Preston Connolly, for their illicit drug enterprise known as the “JJ Line.”
The prosecution claimed that Byrne and Connolly carried out the shooting the day after the phone theft, with Glynn serving as their getaway driver. Allen reportedly conducted surveillance earlier that evening, set fire to the stolen vehicle used in the crime, while Harrison’s residence supposedly served as a staging area on the night of the murder.
Another defendant, Anna McGinn, faced charges for aiding an offender by driving Byrne and Connolly after the incident. Connolly, who had fled to Turkey, was not present in court for the trial.
After more than 15 hours of deliberation, the jury delivered its verdict on Wednesday. Byrne, Allen, and Harrison were unanimously found guilty of murder, while Glynn was convicted of manslaughter by a majority decision. Additionally, all four men were unanimously convicted of possessing a firearm and ammunition with intent to harm and arson. McGinn was acquitted of the charges against her and released.
The sentencing is scheduled for Friday. During the verdict announcement, Harrison appeared dismayed, Glynn showed surprise, and Byrne reacted by throwing a bottle at Allen. A scuffle ensued, with Allen attempting to retaliate before being restrained.
The prosecution detailed the events of October 30, 2022, when Ms. Rutter was shot at her door with a pistol. CCTV footage captured the arrival of three men in a stolen vehicle, two of whom approached the victim’s residence before fleeing. They met a fourth individual in a nearby street, where additional vehicles were waiting, and the stolen car was set ablaze shortly after.
The court heard that Byrne and Connolly were seeking retribution for the stolen phone, with Glynn as the driver, and Allen and Harrison providing support for the drug operation. Reference was made to another murder case during the trial, involving Elle Edwards in Wallasey.
The jury was informed of the defendants’ criminal histories and testimonies, including Byrne’s admission to the shooting and Glynn’s reaction post-incident. Harrison mentioned Allen’s fascination with firearms but expressed uncertainty about the validity of his claims.
McGinn professed ignorance of the crime and denied believing Connolly capable of murder. Byrne chose not to testify, with his defense emphasizing the lack of evidence tying him to the murder scene or the weapon.
Ultimately, the jury found Byrne guilty of murder, rejecting the defense’s arguments.
