Britons residing in 11 different regions have been advised to get ready with essential supplies as the Met Office has issued a “danger to life” weather alert for strong winds.
The warning is set to take effect at 9 pm tonight and will remain in place until midday on Monday, covering parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland. The Met Office warns that wind speeds could soar up to 80mph in exposed areas, leading to potential risks of injuries from flying debris and the possibility of large waves and beach materials hitting seafronts.
Additionally, the national weather service cautions about the likelihood of power outages and potential damage to buildings, affecting mobile phone connectivity. There is also a minor chance of road and bridge closures due to the high winds.
Residents are urged to make preparations in advance for potential power disruptions, including gathering torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other essential items.
In Scotland, a yellow rain warning is also in effect until 10 am on Monday, with concerns about flooding impacting buildings and train services. The Met Office highlights the risk of power cuts and communities being isolated by flooded roads. Rainfall amounts of up to 60mm are expected across the warning area, with higher levels possible in specific regions. The melting snow further contributes to the flood risk, prompting the recommendation to assemble an “emergency flood kit.”
