Met Police Officer Gets 7 Years for Raping Woman

Date:

A police officer from the Metropolitan Police has been sentenced to seven years in prison for raping a woman in her home following a New Year’s Eve gathering. Rupert Edwards, 33, committed the assault while off-duty. The victim, who had been drinking heavily, fell asleep on a sofa as midnight approached. She later woke up to find herself covered in chocolates that party attendees were playfully throwing. Edwards had joined the party in London after midnight.

The victim’s memory of the night was hazy, but she recalled sharing a taxi with Edwards and finding it odd that he did not exit before her. It was revealed in court that Edwards diverted the Uber ride from his residence to the victim’s address. The next recollection the woman had was waking up beside Edwards in her bed, both unclothed. Edwards callously commented on their sexual encounter, leaving the victim feeling repulsed.

The court learned that the woman had not given consent to the intercourse and would never have done so. Subsequently, Edwards brazenly asked her for another sexual encounter via text. In her impact statement, the victim expressed feeling emotionally numb after the attack, stating that the incident continued to affect her despite the conviction not providing closure.

Edwards, residing in Bexhill, East Sussex, was arrested in April 2024 following the victim’s report to the police in October 2023. The rape occurred on New Year’s Day in January 2018. Edwards, a police officer for over eight years before his suspension in 2022, was found guilty of rape on May 22 after a trial.

During sentencing, Judge Nicholas Rimmer remarked that the offense occurred at the victim’s home, which should have been her safe haven. Edwards, who was 24 at the time of the assault, received a seven-year prison term and a restraining order prohibiting contact with the victim or visiting locations where she may be present.

As he was led away by court officers, Edwards smiled at his family in the public gallery. The Crown Prosecution Service representative, Timothy Greaves, highlighted that despite Edwards’ claims of consent, the evidence unequivocally proved rape. He commended the victim for her courage in coming forward and emphasized the importance of victim testimonies in bringing perpetrators to justice.
