Mexican special forces have eliminated a high-ranking member of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) in a recent operation. The individual, known as “El Tuli,” was the chief financial and logistics officer for the cartel leader, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho.” Following Oseguera’s death, El Tuli orchestrated retaliatory attacks throughout Jalisco.
Hugo César Macías Ureña, the real identity of El Tuli, was fatally shot while trying to escape. He was responsible for coordinating violent responses across Mexico after Oseguera’s demise, allegedly offering a reward of 20,000 pesos per soldier killed during the clashes. Mexican authorities seized a significant amount of cash, weapons, and the escape vehicle used by El Tuli.
The aftermath of Oseguera’s death sparked widespread violence in Jalisco, where numerous roadblocks and violent incidents occurred. Gang members engaged in burning and shooting sprees in Puerto Vallarta, setting ablaze banks and local businesses. Over 60 fatalities were reported in 20 Mexican states, including a pregnant woman, 25 National Guard soldiers, law enforcement personnel, and cartel members.
El Tuli’s death triggered a series of attacks on security forces, resulting in casualties and chaos across the region. The situation led Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro to declare a “code red” in the state. El Mencho, who rose to power as the country’s top drug lord after the capture of “El Chapo” Guzmán, had a $15 million bounty on his head from the US State Department.
The CJNG, under the leadership of El Mencho, has expanded rapidly in Mexico in recent years, perpetrating acts of extreme violence to solidify their influence. Oseguera’s journey from avocado picker to cartel leader was marked by brushes with the law and a rise through the ranks of the criminal underworld, culminating in his reign as “El Mencho,” a ruthless figure infamous for his cartel’s brutal tactics.
