A visitor was assaulted by a group of transgender individuals after six of them confronted him at a popular tourist destination. Markus Santl, aged 55, engaged one of the sex workers and took her back to his hotel in Pattaya, Thailand. Following their encounter, Markus discovered that a significant amount of currency had gone missing from his safe.
Suspecting the sex worker of theft, Markus searched for her on the streets and managed to locate her near a beach. However, when he approached her, a group of sex workers surrounded him and pushed him against a wall, demanding his wallet. The victim called for police assistance while one of the workers attempted to snatch his wallet from his back pocket. The group fled upon the arrival of officers.
Witnesses described the scene as the group attacking the lone man, resulting in him being kicked repeatedly. A bystander intervened, returning the wallet to Markus, but was insulted by one of the transgender individuals. Firefighters later aided Markus in retrieving his phone, which had fallen through drain grates. Local residents noted that violent altercations involving transgender individuals were not uncommon in the area, particularly along Pattaya’s Beach Road, known for its concentration of street sex workers.
Despite law enforcement efforts to crack down on such incidents, the sex workers disperse when police approach, only to reconvene once the patrol units exit the area. Officials acknowledge the challenges in addressing the issue effectively. A police station spokesperson stated that upon receiving the complaint, authorities deployed officers to investigate, gather evidence, and take legal action against the offenders.
On separate occasions in February, a Chinese tourist and British tourists were reportedly assaulted by transgender individuals in disputes over money. Pattaya, often referred to as ‘Sin City’, has emerged as a prominent tourist destination, attracting visitors with its nightlife establishments and affordable adult entertainment. However, the city’s reputation has raised concerns about its impact on Thailand’s overall image as a family-friendly vacation spot renowned for its pristine beaches, culinary delights, and cultural heritage.
