A tragic incident occurred during a holiday boat trip in the Florida Keys when Judy Kay Zagorski, a 57-year-old mother from Michigan, lost her life due to a spotted eagle ray leaping out of the water and striking her in the face. Experts termed the event a ‘freak accident’.
The unusual occurrence involving the spotted eagle ray took place near Marathon on Vaca Key’s Atlantic Ocean side as Judy was enjoying a day out with her family in the spring of 2008.
Reports indicate that Judy was seated at the front of the boat, traveling at around 25 mph, when the 75-pound ray, with a wingspan of approximately six feet, suddenly emerged from the sea.
The impact of the collision caused fatal injuries, knocking her backward onto the vessel’s floor. Authorities confirmed that she did not sustain any puncture wounds from the ray’s venomous barbs.
Monroe County’s medical examiner verified that Judy succumbed instantly to blunt force trauma, suffering multiple skull fractures and direct brain injury. Her sister, Joyce Ann Miller, who was beside her, escaped unharmed. Judy’s father, Virgil Bouck, was piloting the boat, and her mother, Verneta, was also present as the family was enjoying a spring break together.
Following the incident, the ray was found dead on the vessel. Wildlife authorities classified it as a freak accident, noting that spotted eagle rays are not typically aggressive and usually only use their venomous tail barbs for defense.
Spotted eagle rays, which can weigh up to 500 pounds with wingspans of up to ten feet, are protected under Florida law and are commonly seen gliding peacefully near the ocean’s surface.
The unexpected death of Judy left residents and tourists shocked. Her brother, Dan Bouck, described her as a remarkable sister who volunteered with terminally ill patients and co-ran Beadle Bay Marina and Campground with her late husband, Steve Zagorski.
Experts stress that incidents of this nature are exceedingly rare. While there have been isolated cases of rays landing in boats before, fatalities are extremely uncommon.
