Britons planning a trip to Dubai this summer may be facing uncertainty due to heightened tensions in the Middle East stemming from the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran.
The latest surge in hostilities saw the US conducting airstrikes on Iranian targets for the ninth consecutive day following the breakdown of a temporary ceasefire agreement earlier in the month.
The US and Iran have been embroiled in conflict since February, triggered by joint strikes by the US and Israel on key Iranian locations. In retaliation, Iran took actions such as closing the Strait of Hormuz and targeting various sites across the Middle East, including Dubai.
Despite the escalating situation, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has maintained its travel advice for the United Arab Emirates, removing the “all but essential travel” advisory issued on June 18.
Although a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the US and Iran to end the conflict within 60 days, recent events suggest that the agreement may have failed. This means that travelers can still visit the UAE without risking their travel insurance being invalidated.
While the FCDO no longer discourages non-essential travel to the UAE, it cautions that the situation remains volatile, and attacks could resume suddenly. This warning was reiterated on July 20.
British nationals are advised to consult the FCDO’s crisis abroad document, adhere to guidance from local authorities, and subscribe to FCDO travel advice alerts. In the event of renewed conflict, travelers should avoid areas near security or military installations, keep travel plans updated, and follow shelter instructions if necessary.
With the FCDO no longer advising against non-essential travel to the UAE, travel insurance is expected to remain valid for new bookings. However, it is crucial to review individual insurance policies to ensure coverage compliance.
Package holidays are anticipated to operate normally, and travelers canceling their trips are unlikely to receive refunds or be able to claim reimbursement through travel insurance at present. In case the FCDO advises against all travel, package holiday cancellations can be made without penalty for a full refund.
