“Middlesbrough and Bristol Lead Europe in Cocaine & Ketamine in Sewage”

Date:

Two British cities have been identified as having the highest levels of cocaine in sewage across Europe, based on a recent study. The European Union Drugs Agency’s multi-city data reveals that Middlesbrough ranks first for both weekday and weekend cocaine levels, followed by Bristol.

Bristol, known for its high student population and vibrant party scene, also leads in Europe for the presence of ketamine in wastewater. Sewage-based studies are considered a reliable method for tracking drug trends as they offer insights into a city’s drug habits without relying on self-reporting.

In the latest data, Middlesbrough recorded an average of 2487.94 milligrams of cocaine per 1,000 people on weekdays, surpassing Amsterdam’s 1039.05. Bristol reported 1280.09 on weekdays and 1517.27 on weekends for cocaine levels.

Notably, Bristol’s weekend ketamine levels at 350 mg/1000p/day exceeded those of Berlin, a popular clubbing destination. London, Manchester, and Glasgow were not included in the study, but have previously ranked high in European cocaine levels.

A government spokesperson expressed concern over the use of ketamine and cocaine in cities, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to combat drug use and disrupt supply chains. Border security measures are being strengthened to tackle criminal organizations involved in drug trafficking, with a significant number of drug seizures reported.

Recent reports indicate a normalization of cocaine use in British towns and cities, with some users openly consuming it in public settings. The study also highlights the popularity of MDMA, amphetamine, and meth among drug users in continental Europe compared to the UK.

Illicit drug traces were found to be more prevalent in measurements taken in Eastern Germany, Scandinavia, and the Netherlands than in UK cities. The study underscores the need for continued vigilance and coordinated actions to address drug-related challenges in urban areas.
