A man faces charges of endangering life following the tragic deaths of four migrants during an attempt to board a small boat crossing the English Channel, as reported by the National Crime Agency. Alnour Mohamed Ali, a 27-year-old Sudanese national, is accused of navigating the boat from France to reach the UK.
The incident occurred at Equihen-Plage near Boulogne-sur-Mer, where two men and two women lost their lives while trying to board a dinghy referred to as a “taxi boat.” Authorities discovered the bodies of the deceased migrants far out at sea off the coast.
After the episode, 38 individuals were sent back to the French shore, whereas 74 migrants successfully made it to the UK. Francois-Xavier Lauch, the head of the Pas-de-Calais region, mentioned that the tragic incident involved individuals who were already in a perilous situation due to the strong sea currents.
A spokesperson from the UK government expressed deep sadness over the deaths and emphasized the ongoing efforts to prevent such tragedies caused by criminal organizations exploiting vulnerable individuals for profit. The French authorities are spearheading the investigation, with support from international partners.
Alnour Mohamed Ali is scheduled to appear at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court today.
