American model Ginger Meadows, inspired by the movie ‘Crocodile Dundee,’ set off on an Australian Outback adventure that tragically ended in disaster. Hailing from Snowmass Village in Colorado, a stark contrast to Darwin’s arid terrain in the Northern Territory, the 24-year-old embarked on a journey with her companion Jane Burchett to visit King’s Cascade aboard the luxury vessel Lady G on March 29, 1987.
The duo had plans to continue their travels to Papua New Guinea after their Australian escapade. Captain Bruce Fitzpatrick steered the boat to the stunning waterfall, known for its crocodile population, with only a few crew members on board.
Despite clear warnings about the presence of dangerous creatures in the water, Ginger and Jane decided to take a dip. As they swam, a large saltwater crocodile approached them. The skipper intervened, throwing a shoe to deter the crocodile, but the women found themselves trapped against the rocky face of the waterfall.
In a harrowing recount, Jane described how the crocodile grabbed Ginger around the waist and pulled her under the water, despite her attempts to escape. Tragically, Ginger’s body was discovered the following day, coinciding with her 25th birthday.
Chief Inspector Arnold Davies from the Port of Broome regional police station revealed that a crocodile tried to attack Ginger’s body while it was being transported on a rescue boat. Meadows’ estranged husband, Dwayne McCaulley, traveled to identify her remains.
In a 2017 interview, Captain Bruce recalled warning Ginger about the crocodile-infested waters before the tragic incident. Ginger’s death remains one of Australia’s most infamous crocodile attacks. According to research by Charles Darwin University in 2024, the Northern Territory recorded 76 crocodile attacks between 1979 and 2022, with a 30% fatality rate.
