A recent report by the Molly Rose Foundation (MRF) has shed light on the concerning issue of young individuals facing various online dangers across gaming platforms, livestreams, and chat rooms. The foundation, established by Molly Russell’s family, emphasized the pressing and alarming threat that goes beyond social media platforms.
Tragically, Molly Russell took her own life at the age of 14 due to exposure to harmful content on social media. Her father, Ian, advocates against a complete social media ban for under 16s, fearing that such a ban could drive young users towards even darker corners of the internet, ultimately absolving tech companies of accountability.
The MRF, in collaboration with safety organization Resolver, released a report highlighting the exploitation of young victims by so-called Com networks. These networks, associated with severe cyberbullying, exploitation, violence, crime, and abuse, have raised concerns among law enforcement agencies worldwide, including the National Crime Agency and FBI.
These malicious networks often target minors for sexual abuse, manipulation into offline violence and self-harm, and coercion to engage in harmful acts like suicide. One distressing example in Resolver’s report recounts the grooming of a teenage girl in a “Sadism Com chat room” to share child sexual abuse material, use racist language, and groom other victims into self-harm and suicide.
The MRF has urged the Government to enhance and broaden the Online Safety Act to effectively tackle these emerging threats. They emphasize the inadequacy of current regulations in addressing the danger posed by Com groups, stressing the need for a more proactive approach to online safety.
Andy Burrows, CEO of MRF, highlighted the urgent need for a comprehensive response to the growing menace posed by Com networks, which exploit children’s vulnerabilities for heinous purposes. The involvement of various stakeholders, including the Government, law enforcement, regulators, and tech platforms, is crucial in combating these threats and safeguarding vulnerable individuals.
Safeguarding minister Jess Phillips underscored the intolerability of a society where children are subjected to torture, exploitation, and coercion online. The commitment to intensify efforts in apprehending perpetrators, dismantling harmful networks, and protecting at-risk children was emphasized.
The NCA Deputy Director, Helen Rance, expressed concerns over the increasing involvement of teenage boys in online criminal communities that promote harm and criminal activities. These networks, operating across borders and various online platforms, engage in cybercrimes, fraud, grooming, and coercion, necessitating coordinated efforts to combat online harm networks in the UK.
The Government’s ongoing consultation on measures to enhance online safety for children includes proposals such as a social media ban for under 16s and app restrictions. The imperative to address these online threats comprehensively and promptly remains a top priority for ensuring the safety of young individuals in the digital age.
