A mother is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter following the death of a man who was allegedly struck by her son’s e-motorcycle. The incident occurred as Ed Ashman was walking home from El Toro High School in Lake Forest, California. The 81-year-old, a substitute teacher, was hit by the e-motorcycle, ridden by the son of Tommi Jo Mejer, who was reportedly performing stunts outside the school. The 14-year-old fled the scene before law enforcement arrived.
Mr. Ashman sustained critical injuries and passed away approximately two weeks after the collision. Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer expressed that the mother allowed her underage son to operate the e-motorcycle despite warnings about its dangers, ultimately resulting in a tragic outcome.
The accused was cautioned about the illegal usage of the e-motorcycle before the accident, as confirmed by body camera footage showing her denying ownership or access to such a vehicle. Spitzer lamented the loss of a respected individual due to the irresponsible actions of a minor, emphasizing the need for accountability among parents and children in society.
Initially facing multiple charges, including child endangerment and providing false information, Mejer’s charges were later upgraded to involuntary manslaughter among others. If convicted on all counts, she could potentially receive a maximum sentence of seven years and eight months in state prison.
In response to the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was initiated to assist with Mr. Ashman’s medical and funeral expenses. The late veteran, remembered for his military service and dedication as a husband, father of three, and grandfather, has left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
