Mother Convicted of Murder for Poisoning Toddler

Date:

A woman has been convicted of the killing of her young son after administering a deadly combination of prescription drugs to him before he could be placed in protective care. Emma Barnett, residing in Debden, Essex, concealed herself in the attic following a court ruling on November 8, 2024, which decided that her 14-month-old son Oakley should be taken away.

During the trial at Cambridge Crown Court, Judge Mr. Justice Derek Sweeting informed the jury that the 36-year-old mother had left her car at Epping Forest and returned home on foot. Essex Police reported that Barnett and Oakley were initially reported missing, with suspicions that Barnett had taken her child to the forest. However, authorities later entered her residence and discovered them in the loft.

The prosecution presented evidence indicating that Barnett had mixed medication with milk in a bottle, which she then gave to Oakley, resulting in his demise. Following the trial, the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed Barnett’s guilt of murder.

Authorities engaged with Barnett over the phone and through the loft entrance. Initially claiming that Oakley was sleeping, Barnett later confessed to the police, stating, “I have killed him.” The judge highlighted that social workers were attempting to locate Barnett and protect Oakley on the day of the incident.

In her defense, Barnett asserted that her actions were not intentional but were motivated by a desire to extend her time with Oakley. Investigators uncovered two baby bottles in the loft containing substances testing positive for sedatives and antidepressants. Medical experts suggested that the combination of these substances could lead to respiratory issues.

Nicola Pope, a senior Crown prosecutor, emphasized that Barnett deliberately administered a lethal mixture to her son. The sentencing for Barnett is scheduled to take place at Cambridge Crown Court on June 5.

Detective Inspector James Holmes from Essex Police expressed the emotional toll of the investigation, offering condolences to Oakley and his loved ones.
