“Mother Misdiagnosed: Young woman’s battle with stage 4 colon cancer”

Date:

A mother of two, previously told she was too young to have cancer, shares her journey of being misdiagnosed with piles before being diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer that had spread to her liver. Amber Kissell, 45, began noticing concerning changes in her body after giving birth to her daughter in late 2015.

Initially attributing the symptoms to post-pregnancy effects, Amber visited her primary care doctor upon seeing blood. Despite being told it was a fissure, she felt uneasy. Subsequent visits to a colorectal specialist yielded the same conclusion of hemorrhoids, dismissing her persistent bleeding.

Despite returning multiple times due to ongoing symptoms, Amber’s concerns were downplayed by doctors who considered her too young for cancer. In hindsight, Amber regrets not seeking a second opinion earlier, acknowledging the denial of the possibility of a severe illness.

After nearly 10 months of worsening symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, and abdominal pain, a frightening episode prompted her to seek emergency care. Following a colonoscopy, the confirmation of stage 4 cancer with liver metastasis at the age of 36 shattered her world.

Enduring 12 rounds of intense chemotherapy, Amber defied the odds as the treatment eradicated all cancer cells in her body. Surgery further confirmed the absence of cancer, providing a sense of relief despite the lingering emotional strain.

Advocating for early detection, Amber now shares her story on social media platforms, emphasizing the importance of taking symptoms seriously regardless of age. While recognizing the increasing colon cancer cases among younger adults, she urges individuals to prioritize their health, seek medical attention promptly, and not dismiss any warning signs.

Reflecting on her journey, Amber emphasizes the unpredictability of life and the necessity of proactive healthcare. Her heartfelt plea resonates with a simple yet powerful message: prioritize your well-being and address any health concerns promptly.
