A mother reveals that medical professionals initially suspected her of harming her own infant due to unexplained fractures, later discovering a rare medical condition. Kendra Larsen and her husband Eric faced scrutiny following injuries to their newborn daughter, Hadley.
Hadley has a unique condition known as “China doll,” causing extreme fragility in her bones, leading to 148 fractures. She was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), commonly referred to as brittle bone disease, which hinders collagen production necessary for bone strength.
Initially unaware of Hadley’s condition, Kendra, 44, from Idaho Falls, Idaho, expressed their confusion when seeking medical help for their four-week-old daughter. Suspecting hip issues, X-rays uncovered multiple fractures, sparking concern and a full skeletal survey revealing additional fractures.
The situation escalated as medical professionals hinted at potential abuse, with one even suggesting brain damage. The distressing turn of events led to Hadley being hospitalized for safety reasons, while her parents faced accusations of child abuse, a deeply troubling experience for the family.
Fortunately, a pediatrician familiar with OI intervened, advocating against abuse allegations and suggesting Hadley’s condition as the likely cause. Despite this, the family endured a lengthy period of testing and uncertainty before receiving a formal diagnosis, bringing mixed emotions of relief and sadness.
