Mother of Murdered Teen Speaks Out on Social Media Tragedy

Date:

A mother whose teenage son was tragically murdered has shared the heart-wrenching story of how she learned about his death through social media before rushing to the crime scene in an attempt to reach him.

Zoe Mitchell, aged 51, recounted the harrowing experience of hearing rumors on Facebook about a stabbing incident involving her 18-year-old son, Owen Dunn. After receiving a phone call questioning the truth of the news, Zoe immediately drove to the nearby location in Swindon, Wiltshire, where she was met with the devastating sight of a forensic tent containing Owen’s lifeless body. Frantically trying to reach her son, Zoe’s worst fears were confirmed.

She was instructed to wait in a police car, where she was informed that Owen had been murdered. Zoe has now chosen to speak out about the traumatic ordeal following the recent public identification of the second perpetrator involved in her son’s killing.

Tyler Hunt, aged 17 at the time, and a 15-year-old boy, who has since been identified as Ciaran Newman upon turning 18, were found guilty of Owen’s murder. Newman inflicted a fatal stab wound, puncturing Owen’s heart.

Expressing relief that her son’s killer can finally be named, Zoe advocates for a change in the law to ensure that young individuals convicted of murder are automatically identified. Reflecting on the moment she learned of Owen’s death, Zoe emphasized the shock and pain of the tragic event.

During the trial, it was revealed that Owen was confronted by the assailants while cycling to meet his girlfriend. The defendants were convicted of murder in December 2023 after a three-week trial, with Hunt serving at least 19 years in prison and Newman undergoing a 12-year sentence.

Zoe’s anguish over the leniency of the sentences for her son’s killers and her desire for greater accountability in such cases have fueled her determination to raise awareness about knife crime through the establishment of a community interest company named Owen’s World in honor of her beloved son. The organization aims to educate youth on the dangers of carrying knives and advocates for positive change to prevent similar tragedies.
