The mother of a 19-year-old victim in the Nottingham attacks is seeking a meeting with Keir Starmer, alleging that the justice system allowed Valdo Calocane to escape justice for murder. Emma Webber, mother of Barnaby, expressed disappointment in the failure of various agencies to prevent Calocane, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, from killing three individuals and attempting to kill three others on June 13, 2023. Calocane, 32, is currently under psychiatric detention after confessing to manslaughter based on diminished responsibility.
Ms. Webber criticized NHS mental health services and the police for their shortcomings, stating that Calocane avoided a murder conviction and trial by pleading to manslaughter, denying the victims and their families justice. She emphasized overlooked evidence of Calocane’s history, behaviors, and culpability, pointing out flaws in the prosecution and expert witness testimonies.
Urging a meeting with government officials including the Prime Minister, Attorney General, Home Secretary, Health Secretary, and Justice Minister, Ms. Webber demanded accountability for Calocane’s actions and prompt action despite the ongoing inquiry. James Coates, son of one of the victims, Ian, highlighted systemic failures by Nottinghamshire Police and NHS professionals in handling Calocane, vowing to push for full accountability to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
