Mother Overdoses on ADHD Meds: Near Fatal Addiction

Date:

A mother of three found herself dependent on ADHD medication, consuming over seven times the recommended adult dosage, a level that could have been fatal. Shannon Anderson, aged 37, experienced paranoia, sleep deprivation, and physical decline while ingesting 300mg daily of dextroamphetamine, commonly known as Adderall.

During her darkest moments, the stress on her body was so intense that her jugular vein was visibly throbbing in her neck. Shannon has shared the grim reality of her addiction and the pivotal moment she recognized it as a matter of life or death.

“After taking one pill, I was instantly hooked,” Shannon confessed. “The moment the pill took effect, I felt a euphoria unlike anything I had ever experienced before. Gradually, the addiction took control, and my tolerance had escalated to the point where I relied on Adderall to function in daily life.”

Shannon recounted how easy it was for her to initially access the potent drug. “When I first sought Adderall around 15 years ago, obtaining it was incredibly simple,” she explained. “You visit a doctor, claim difficulty focusing, suggest the possibility of having ADHD, and undergo a ‘test.'”

“Essentially, you sit in a room with a camera and a computer, pressing a space bar at specific intervals on the screen. Fail a few times, and voila, you are diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed controlled substances.”

Before transforming her life, Shannon’s addiction inflicted severe damage on her mental and physical well-being. She developed habits like moving her jaw side to side similar to a crack addict, a behavior that persists to this day. Married to Mark, 44, and a mother to Greyson, six, Harrison, four, and Sutton, two, Shannon eventually realized the gravity of her addiction.

“I was consuming at least 300mg daily. I vividly recall the first time I ingested five 30mg XR pills simultaneously and repeated the dosage later that day,” she shared. The repercussions were severe, leading to chronic dry eye due to excessive stimulant intake, resulting in forgetfulness to blink and lack of sleep. Shannon also suffered from chronic hives, necessitating steroid treatment.

“My jaw movements mimicked those of a crack addict, a habit I still exhibit when concentrating. The blood flow in my body was so intense that my mother once noticed my jugular vein pulsing visibly in my neck,” Shannon recounted. “My pupils dilated to the extent that they were as large as my iris, attracting comments. The paranoia and sleep deprivation induced by Adderall or stimulants heightened anxiety levels, leading to hallucinations in combination with sleep deprivation.”

Hailing from Kansas City, Missouri, Shannon pinpointed a crucial moment when she confronted the harsh reality. “Engaging in conversations with intravenous drug users triggered a profound realization in me,” she stated. “My experience mirrored theirs—I succumbed to the drug and could no longer resist.”

“I constantly viewed myself as distinct, not an addict, but that instance forced me to acknowledge my addiction. The substance became irrelevant. That was the juncture where I understood it was a matter of life or death.”

Determined to reclaim her life, Shannon began participating in 12-step meetings. “That’s where I could truly be transparent. Having sober support was crucial,” she emphasized.

“Establishing my Sober is Chic venture and leveraging social media connected me with countless individuals sharing similar experiences. This is undeniably an epidemic.”

Shannon cautioned that the current scenario could facilitate easier access to addiction. “I’ve encountered clients with similar encounters. Family members have reached out via social media, detailing how their loved ones obtained prescriptions through virtual consultations—a practice that was nonexistent during my addiction. Hence, they could acquire medications from multiple physicians.”

Despite facing numerous obstacles, Shannon remains optimistic. “You can overcome this. Cease convincing yourself otherwise. Your addiction poses a lethal threat. If not, you’ll endure a wretched existence until another peril claims you.”

“My programs and coaching can guide you through this journey. It’s a choice between life and death, and it’s time to opt for life.”
