SpaceX is gearing up to launch its most powerful rocket ever, marking a significant step in Elon Musk’s ambitious plans for missions to the Moon and Mars.
The aerospace company, led by the billionaire entrepreneur, is set to conduct the 12th uncrewed test flight of its cutting-edge Starship rocket. This launch is crucial as it paves the way for future missions venturing deeper into space.
Scheduled just two years before a planned Moon mission using the same vehicle to transport astronauts, today’s launch will be a pivotal moment for SpaceX.
The live stream of the launch will be accessible on both the Mirror website and SpaceX’s official platform. The Super Heavy rocket is expected to touch down in the Gulf of Mexico shortly after liftoff, with the Starship’s landing in the Indian Ocean anticipated about an hour later.
The upgraded Super Heavy booster boasts enhanced power with 33 revamped Raptor engines, offering increased thrust while being lighter in weight. Similarly, the upper-stage Starship’s propulsion system has been refined for extended missions with features like ship-to-ship docking, in-space refueling, and improved maneuverability.
Success indicators for future tests include the recovery of both Starship and the Super Heavy booster post-flight, as SpaceX aims to develop reusable spacecraft.
Elon Musk recently announced plans to make SpaceX a public company, following a substantial stock sale. Despite facing operational losses of $2.6 billion last year, the company continues to focus on its mission to advance human space exploration through innovative technologies and sustainable practices.
The fully stacked Starship craft and Super Heavy booster, towering over 124m and weighing approximately 5,000 metric tonnes, are primed for launch from the Starbase facilities in Texas.
The debut flight of the Starship V3 showcases new features tailored for future lunar and Martian missions. The live stream of the launch will be available on various platforms, including the Mirror website, SpaceX’s official platforms, and the company’s YouTube channel.
As the event unfolds, viewers can witness the launch preparations starting approximately 45 minutes before the scheduled liftoff time, set for 5:30 pm local time (11:30 pm BST) today.
