“NHS Trust Fires 11 Staff for Unauthorized Medical Record Access”

Date:

An NHS trust has terminated the employment of 11 staff members for unlawfully accessing the medical records of individuals affected by the Nottingham attacks. Valdo Calocane committed fatal acts in June 2023, resulting in the deaths of two students and a caretaker, along with injuries to three others.

The Nottingham university hospitals NHS trust (NUH) confirmed the dismissal of the staff following an investigation into unauthorized access to the victims’ medical files. Additionally, 14 employees received disciplinary actions in the form of written warnings. The individuals investigated included medical professionals such as doctors, nurses, and administrators. The specific roles of those dismissed have not been disclosed.

Reacting to the dismissals and disciplinary measures, Emma Webber, the mother of one of the victims, expressed shock at the extent of misconduct, citing that 150 staff members had accessed the records. She raised concerns about the legitimacy of access granted to 48 staff members and challenged the rationale provided by the trust.

Dr. Manjeet Shehmar, the medical director at NUH, extended apologies to the families of the victims and emphasized the trust’s zero-tolerance policy towards unauthorized access to medical records. She reiterated the importance of lawful and justified access to patient records, emphasizing the need for accountability among staff members.

The trust has reported the breach to the Information Commissioner’s Office and Nottinghamshire police, with follow-up activities planned in collaboration with regulatory bodies. Calocane received an indefinite hospital order in January 2024 for his crimes.

In a separate incident at the University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, 48 staff members were found to have accessed the medical records of victims of the Southport attack without valid reasons. The attack resulted in the deaths of three children and severe injuries to others. Survivors, including a dance teacher named Leanne Lucas, expressed outrage at the invasion of their privacy by staff members.

Legal representatives of the victims criticized the breach of privacy and lack of transparency by the trust in handling the situation. The chief executive of UHLG issued a formal apology to the affected patients and assured full cooperation with regulators and professional bodies to address the breach of patient confidentiality.

The incidents highlight the importance of upholding patient confidentiality and the consequences of unauthorized access to medical records within healthcare institutions.
