“Mother’s Instinct Saves Son: Holiday Illness Turns Life-Threatening”

Date:

A mother is advising parents to follow their instincts after her 10-year-old son fell seriously ill during a family vacation. Caroline Lawton, residing in Warrington, Cheshire, went on a 12-night all-inclusive trip to Sharm El Sheikh with her husband and two children. Shortly before their return flight, her son Jude began experiencing gastrointestinal issues.

Initially, Caroline attributed his symptoms to a typical holiday ailment known as ‘Egypt belly’. However, as they were preparing to leave, Jude’s condition worsened, with increased fatigue and bloody stools observed on the plane. Upon landing in the UK, Jude’s health rapidly deteriorated. He was hospitalized, diagnosed with STEC E.coli, a bacterial infection leading to severe complications like haemolytic uraemic syndrome, which can result in kidney failure.

Jude was transferred to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, where he received dialysis and a blood transfusion due to kidney failure. Caroline described the distressing experience of watching her son’s health decline before seeing signs of improvement following treatment.

After two weeks in the hospital, Jude’s kidney function began to recover gradually, and he was discharged for continued recuperation at home. Caroline emphasized the importance of recognizing warning signs and trusting parental instincts. She shared her story to raise awareness and prevent other families from enduring similar traumatic experiences.

Despite only dining outside the hotel once during their vacation booked through easyJet holidays, the source of Jude’s infection remains unknown. Investigations by both the holiday company and the hotel are ongoing to determine the cause.

An easyJet holidays spokesperson expressed sympathy for Jude’s illness and assured ongoing support for the family, collaborating with the hotel partner to investigate the incident further.
