A former Conservative Party member, now aligned with Reform, is taking legal action against his previous party for locking him out of his office following his defection. Andrew Rosindell, the Member of Parliament for Romford, is pursuing a case in the High Court to regain access to Margaret Thatcher House in Romford. The dispute arose when Rosindell was informed by his local Conservative association that his occupancy of the office was contingent on his Tory affiliation.
Rosindell, who severed ties with the Conservative Party in January and criticized them for disregarding constituents’ opinions, has been utilizing a private space at the Romford Conservative Association building for over two decades. However, the association abruptly changed the locks last Wednesday, preventing Rosindell from entering the premises. He contends that this action was unjustified and is seeking a court order to be reinstated.
The legal proceedings at the High Court included Rosindell expressing concerns about his personal safety due to being denied access to his panic room at work. The hearing was adjourned after it was revealed that the association had minimal notice about the injunction application. Rosindell, who switched allegiance to Nigel Farage’s party earlier this year, cited disillusionment with the Conservative Party’s governance and failure to address past errors as reasons for his departure.
Rosindell’s legal representative emphasized his uninterrupted occupation of the office for parliamentary duties and the association’s exclusionary actions. The barrister highlighted the hindrance caused by the lockout on Rosindell’s ability to serve constituents effectively, manage casework, and utilize essential security infrastructure provided for his safety as an MP.
The judge postponed further proceedings until Rosindell’s formal claim against the Romford Conservative Association is lodged. The association’s legal counsel argued that the terms of office usage were linked to Rosindell’s party affiliation. The judge criticized the rushed nature of the injunction application and stressed the importance of proper legal processes in resolving the dispute.
