The chair of the Defence Select Committee has issued a warning that the public is not fully cognizant of the level of threat facing the country. Labour MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi expressed concerns about the UK’s security status, emphasizing that the nation is ill-prepared amidst escalating risks from Russia and religious extremists.
In an interview with the Sunday Mirror, the senior MP advocated for an increase in defense expenditure, highlighting potential job losses in the sector. He stressed the need for a national dialogue on defense to raise awareness among the British populace regarding the existing threats.
The MP pointed out the growing dangers in the gray zone and cyberspace, urging the government to engage in discussions beyond occasional speeches by officials. He emphasized the multifaceted threats emanating from various sources, including Russia’s involvement in cyberattacks and incidents of corruption influencing British politicians.
Recent warnings from former military and intelligence figures underscored concerns about underfunding in the Armed Forces. While acknowledging the government’s commitment to increased defense spending, the MP urged for a more substantial investment to address the current challenges effectively.
In response, a Government spokesperson highlighted the UK’s significant defense spending within NATO and emphasized the country’s leadership role in the Alliance. The spokesperson outlined the planned increase in defense expenditure, reaching 2.6% of GDP by 2027, and reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to national security with a long-term goal of 5% of GDP expenditure by 2035. Collaboration with allies for deterrence and defense readiness was also emphasized.
