A member of parliament has stirred controversy among her colleagues by expressing shock at the drinking habits within Westminster. Green Party MP Hannah Spencer raised concerns about the culture of alcohol consumption in Parliament, citing instances of what she deemed as unprofessional and risky behavior by some MPs.
Following an interview with the website Joe, Spencer faced backlash online, with critics labeling her as a puritan. Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, seized the opportunity to criticize Spencer, suggesting a contradiction in the Green Party’s stance on alcohol and drug legalization.
Spencer clarified that she was not opposed to a casual drink but was highlighting the importance of sobriety among MPs during official duties like voting.
In response to the backlash, Spencer took to Instagram to defend her position, emphasizing that while she enjoys alcohol herself, she believes that MPs should not indulge in excessive drinking during work hours, as it disconnects them from the realities faced by the public.
The drinking culture in Westminster has faced criticism previously, with incidents like the temporary closure of the Stranger’s bar due to alleged spiking. In a separate incident, Labour MP Neil Coyle faced repercussions for drunken behavior in Commons bars, leading to his suspension and admission of seeking help for alcohol-related issues.
Alcohol is subsidized in Parliament, with bars receiving taxpayer funding. Prices for drinks are relatively low, with pints starting at £5.45 and glasses of white wine at £6.55, which is lower than the average prices in the Westminster borough.
