A frigid cold front is poised to move through the entire nation, bringing a 600-mile expanse of snow, as depicted by new weather maps.
Recent forecasts from WXCharts show an anticipated snowfall covering nearly the whole country, with a particular region also encountering the uncommon weather event of freezing rain. Despite relatively warmer temperatures in recent days, the weather has been tumultuous, marked by strong winds and heavy rains that have impacted almost every corner of the nation.
The latest weather predictions indicate that the chaotic weather conditions will persist into February and will further intensify with the occurrence of freezing rain, coinciding with a significant drop in temperatures that could dip below zero.
According to the most recent WXCharts data, an Arctic system is expected to arrive just before Valentine’s Day on February 13, potentially unleashing snow across a 601-mile span from north to south, covering the entire length of the country. While the snow is likely to accumulate up to a couple of centimeters, the conditions are conducive for more severe freezing rain over a smaller area.
Freezing rain is projected to fall as a wintry shower over southern Wales, specifically near Newport and Cardiff, encompassing areas like Carphilly, Cwmbran, Pontypool, Merthyr Tydfil, and Ebbw Vale, with temperatures plummeting to -4°C. Unlike the snowfall, the freezing rain is expected to be short-lived, ceasing by 6 p.m., approximately three hours after onset in Wales, with an estimated precipitation rate of around 0.1mm per hour. The rain is forecasted to transition to normal rainfall upon reaching Bristol on the same day.
The maps suggest that the snow cover will persist over the country for the upcoming days, lasting at least until February 15. The extended forecast from the Met Office spanning from February 6 to 15 warns of upcoming rain and a shift to colder temperatures.
Anticipated scenarios include frontal systems moving from the Atlantic towards the UK, influenced by a southward-shifted jet stream, likely leading to periods of rain, particularly in flood-prone areas. As these rain bands progress northward, some areas in northern England and Scotland, especially higher elevations, may experience snowfall due to encounters with colder air.
In regions where freezing rain is expected, temperatures could drop as low as -3°C to -4°C. The appearance of an orange patch on the maps signifies the rare freezing rain phenomenon over parts of Wales.
Heavier snowfall is expected in Wales, the Midlands, and East Anglia on Friday evening, extending the wintry conditions across England, Scotland, and Wales throughout the Valentine’s Day weekend, promising a cold and snowy start for many across the UK.
