A member of NATO has raised concerns about the escalating possibility of a third global conflict. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski emphasized the need to be ready for a war on a scale comparable to past generations. With borders shared with both Russia and Ukraine, Sikorski warned that Poland would be at the forefront of any potential Russian aggression.
Highlighting the critical importance of recognizing the imminent danger, Sikorski stressed that Poland cannot afford to be complacent or believe that the conflict does not concern them. He bluntly stated, “Putin desires surrender, not peace,” emphasizing that a defeat for Ukraine would only embolden Russian threats.
The foreign minister also drew attention to Russia’s aggressive actions against NATO countries along its eastern flank, including drone intrusions, railway disruptions, and disinformation campaigns. He recounted the tragic death of seven-year-old Polish girl Amelia Gzhesko in Ukraine due to a Russian missile strike on a residential building.
Recent events have further heightened tensions, with NATO air defenses in Romania placed on high alert following a close encounter with a Russian drone during attacks on Ukrainian ports. NATO fighter jets have been deployed in response to potential Russian missile and drone strikes in both Poland and Romania.
Meanwhile, Ukraine faced continued Russian attacks, including artillery and drone assaults in the Dnipropetrovsk region, resulting in injuries. Ukrainian Armed Forces retaliated by targeting an oil depot in the Russian-occupied Luhansk region and an energy facility in Belgorod, causing widespread power outages.
The escalating hostilities underscore the growing threat of conflict in the region, with NATO and its member states on high alert for potential Russian aggression.
