Richard Ramirez, famously known as the Night Stalker, instilled fear throughout California in the 1980s by breaking into homes at random and committing brutal attacks on the occupants.
Before his capture, Ramirez killed approximately 20 individuals, with claims from a former jailor suggesting he could have had even more victims if he desired.
During a court testimony, Sheriff’s Deputy Jim Ellis revealed that Ramirez detailed his violent acts of shootings, stabbings, and mutilations in a calm and boastful manner for around 30 minutes.
Ramirez expressed a twisted enjoyment in inflicting suffering on his victims, admitting to taking disturbing photographs, gouging out a woman’s eyes, and reveling in the cruelty of his actions. He also admitted to leaving a fingerprint at a crime scene, which ultimately led to his capture.
Eventually, Ramirez chillingly summarized his motive in five haunting words, stating, “I love to kill people.”
Despite Ramirez’s denial through his lawyer, a judge deemed his statement admissible. He was later convicted of 13 murders and numerous other violent crimes in California.
Ramirez received a death sentence after being found guilty of 13 counts of murder, five attempted murders, 11 sexual assaults, and 14 burglaries. Throughout his trial, Ramirez appeared smug, showing a hint of amusement.
He passed away on death row due to natural causes.
