A Labour Member of Parliament was shocked to witness a bold shoplifter clearing shelves at a store in central London. Joani Reid expressed her surprise to Sir Mark Rowley after observing a man filling his bag with goods and leaving without being reported by the staff. This incident occurred twice within a few hours, with the shop employees indicating they no longer bother reporting such thefts.
The MP described the shoplifting incident, involving the theft of expensive hair products, where the shelves were completely emptied. Despite the staff’s indifference, Ms. Reid took it upon herself to report the crime to the authorities. She highlighted the nonchalant attitude of the shop staff towards the theft, expressing her astonishment at their lack of concern.
During a session with the Commons home affairs select committee, Sir Mark Rowley acknowledged the varied responses of shops to shoplifting and emphasized the importance of reporting such incidents. He mentioned an increase in the prosecution of shoplifting cases and the efforts to crack down on the crime.
Sir Mark also criticized some parts of the retail sector for their lack of cooperation in providing evidence and support for criminal investigations. He deemed their behavior unacceptable and called for improved collaboration with law enforcement agencies.
The government has pledged to tackle shoplifting by strengthening neighborhood policing teams and revising legislation that currently hinders the prosecution of thefts under £200. Statistics from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show a 5% rise in shoplifting offenses in the year leading up to September 2025, with a total of 519,381 cases reported compared to 492,660 in the previous year.
