“Norse Atlantic CEO Warns of Flight Cancellations”

Date:

The chief executive of a prominent airline has issued a warning about upcoming flight cancellations following the necessity to scrap certain routes departing from the UK. Eivind Roald, the CEO of Norse Atlantic Airways, recently made the decision to cancel flights from London Gatwick Airport to Los Angeles due to a significant surge in jet fuel prices, which spiked by over 100% in just a few days.

Numerous airlines worldwide have been forced to cancel flights as Iran’s control over the critical Strait of Hormuz, a vital global supply route, persists. Concurrently, US President Donald Trump has been directing the US Navy to enforce a blockade on Iranian ports.

During an interview with BBC Newsnight, Mr. Roald indicated that more flight cancellations are expected across the industry. He mentioned that while Norse Atlantic intends to maintain flights from London Gatwick, Athens, and Rome this summer without any further cancellations, he anticipates other airlines will likely follow suit, especially on short-haul European routes.

Following the cancellation of flights between London and Los Angeles, Norse Atlantic explained that the decision was a result of an unforeseen global fuel crisis, emphasizing the need to protect their long-term sustainability and reliability for passengers during the summer season. The airline expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to affected passengers and pledged to assist them as best as possible.

Amid mounting concerns over jet fuel shortages and the potential for additional flight disruptions, the UK Government issued a statement in response to alerts from the European Union. EU energy commissioner Dan Jorgensen warned that many holiday plans could be impacted by flight cancellations or exorbitant ticket prices.

The Department for Transport has provided guidance directly to passengers booked on carriers such as Jet2, Ryanair, Wizz, easyJet, and British Airways, reassuring them that there is currently no urgent need to alter travel arrangements. UK airlines procure jet fuel in advance, and airports maintain adequate stocks to ensure operational resilience. The government is collaborating closely with the aviation sector to monitor risks and minimize passenger disturbances.

Passengers were reminded of their legal rights in the event of flight cancellations, including entitlement to a full refund or alternative routing. Detailed information on the prevailing situation and its implications for travelers is available in a dedicated factsheet.
