A nurse from Merseyside has admitted to mistakenly claiming almost £6,000 in sick pay from an NHS trust while secretly working elsewhere. Lian Kenny, who worked for North West Care NHS Foundation Trust, which later merged with Mersey Care, was found to have been employed by Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Trust from August 2020 to October 2021 despite being on sick leave.
During a hearing at the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), it was revealed that Mrs. Kenny, a registered nurse since 2015, was investigated in September 2021 and accepted the charges against her. She expressed regret for her actions, acknowledging her error in judgment.
Mrs. Kenny, who served as a community nurse team leader at the Trust from December 2018 to October 2021, was reported to the NMC by Maria Tyson, head of nursing at Mersey Care, for working at Bridgewater while on sick leave. An internal audit investigation showed that Mrs. Kenny received £5,993.51 in sick pay from the Trust, which she repaid in full.
Following an agreement with the NMC, Mrs. Kenny admitted to dishonest behavior for personal gain and was suspended from nursing for six months. She has since reflected on her actions, expressing remorse and a commitment to upholding professional standards. Mrs. Kenny is currently employed as a clinical lead at Alamaz Limited and is set to resume nursing practice on October 27.
