“Nursing Students in UK Struggle Financially, Consider Quitting”

Date:

Nursing students across the UK are facing financial worries, with a recent survey revealing that almost all of them are concerned about their finances. More than half of the students have had to reduce expenses on necessities like food and utility bills due to the high cost of living. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) conducted the poll, showing that 95% of nursing students are troubled by financial issues, and 56% have resorted to cutting back on essentials.

Furthermore, a significant portion of students, about 34%, find themselves short of over £500 each month, leading them to either compromise on essentials or accumulate debt. This financial strain is causing students to reconsider their career path, with nearly two-thirds contemplating quitting their nursing studies. The top reasons cited for this consideration include juggling work and study, stress-related mental health challenges, and financial difficulties.

In response to these challenges, the RCN is advocating for enhanced financial support that adjusts annually with inflation in addition to the current funding structure. The organization is also pushing for upfront grants to cover extra expenses specific to nursing degrees, such as travel costs for clinical placements.

Students shared their personal struggles, with one mentioning the extreme measures taken to manage finances, including canceling direct debits for utilities. Another student highlighted the mental toll of financial stress, revealing the daily concerns about money management and the norm of accumulating credit card debt among peers.

The General Secretary and Chief Executive of the RCN, Professor Nicola Ranger, emphasized the urgency of addressing the financial hardships faced by nursing students to ensure a sustainable future workforce for the NHS. The Department of Health and Social Care acknowledged the importance of supporting nurses and mentioned existing measures such as non-repayable grants and additional incentives for specialized nursing fields.

Overall, the survey, conducted by the RCN and gathering responses from 2,504 nursing students, sheds light on the significant financial challenges impacting the education and well-being of future healthcare professionals.
